Competency-Based Interviews and how to nail them!

Updated: Mar 10, 2023

With the world opening up again after an unusual and trying 12 months, the job market is certainly booming.

Lockdown has instigated re-evaluating priorities, work life balance review and people realising they can chase their dreams and go for that job they've always wanted. We think that so many people used to be in a blinkered rut without knowing it - Just getting up, doing your commute, working, coming home, watching TV and then waking up to do it all over again the next day.

We are all guilty of losing sight of the small things and the important stuff and lockdown has taught us to value those hours spend with the family or doing a hobby you love. We have seen a lot of people changing industries and a lot of people have retrained during lockdown and are now ready to start a new chapter.

There are some roles that will require a competency based question area to the interview so we are going to help you with some hints and tips to come across as well as you can with these interviews.

A great way to deal with competency-based questions is by using the STAR model. What's the STAR model we hear you say? Well, read on....

The STAR model stands for:

  • SITUATION

  • TASK

  • ACTION

  • RESULT

These 4 key indicators will help you to answer the questions in a structured and concise way, ensuring you explain clearly how you succeeded in the situation.

So we know the acronym and the meaning of each letter but lets go a little deeper.

SITUATION - Use an example of when a problem arose, your skills were needed or you had an idea. Describe the situation you were in and try and make it as relevant to the role as possible

TASK - Describe the action the job requires you take in this situation. Explain the task and the goals that were desired or that you needed to achieve

ACTION - Explain the action you took to complete the task. If you took a different action than the usual one then explain why you chose a different path. This is a good time to demonstrate how your key skills fit with the role you're applying for.

RESULT - Conclude this section with the results. Be honest! If it didn't go to plan explain why it didn't work and what you did to rectify this. You may have run through the process again but changed the action. This can demonstrate flexibility to your working environment.

This is a great way to show your knowledge, experience and skills and demonstrate how you would fit in to the business and the role.

It's a good time to shine and show the interviewers your career highlights that they may have missed on your CV.

We recommend that you take extra steps before your interview to ensure you come across confident, self-assured and positive and you can answer with conviction, removing the opportunity for awkward silences to creep in whilst you think.

These are the 5 key steps we recommend for a competency based interview. If you're not sure the interview format we would recommend be prepared anyway.
