Recognition and Reward is not important ❌
You're paid to do a job, it's what you're here to do and I won't hold your hand! 🤨
Sometimes, when speaking with businesses and leaders, it is clear they don't quite grasp the impact or importance of reward and recognition 🤦♀️
As a business owner, we don't have someone with us patting us on the back or congratulating us on a job well done 👏
We get sh*t done, we succeed, we move on, we get sh*t done, we fail, we move on ♾️
But when you employ staff, reward and recognition is really important❗
Not only is it a nice thing to do (yes the warm and fuzzies 'Do the right thing'), but it can also:
😄 Boost morale
🤝 Bring your team closer together
📈 Increase productivity
BUT (and a big but!)
If it done incorrectly, it can do the exact opposite. It can:
😤 Cause resentment
📉 Decrease morale
😖 Cause friction within a team
🫥 Reduce staff engagement
Scenario (This actually happened!): Your team of 3 needs to hit a target of 50 sales by the end of the week, the pressure is on. 1 team member is away on leave, returning on Friday (deadline day).
The remaining 2 team members work their butts off and by Friday morning they are at 37. Returning team member calls in a favour with an existing contact and secures the last 13 WaHoo! Target hit and everyone is happy🥳
Monday comes and the Team Leaders comes in with a little hamper (sweets & chocolate) and gives it to the one that secured the last 13, nothing for the other 2 who secured 37 sales - Not even a thank you, well done, nothing! 😡
If you are going to reward a result based on TEAM effort, then reward the TEAM, not just the one that got it over the line!
A simple gesture can make all the difference even if it's a tub of chocolates for the team - It is not the actual reward that matters, it is the recognition for going above and beyond 🔍
